Balancing and Opening the Throat Chakra

Genevieve Godwin

Hi, my loves! I hope you are doing well!

Do you have issues expressing yourself or do you have issues communicating in a kind way? Are you really tight in the neck or shoulders?

If yes, it could be a sign that your throat chakra needs a little love.

The throat chakra is the 5th chakra in the chakra system. It's located in the throat and it's represented by the color blue. This chakra is an energy output center. It works together with the sacral chakra to express your emotions and creativity in an authentic way. It is also highly activated in the waning moon and by the sky and the ocean.

Themes of the throat chakra:

  • Communication

  • Authentic self-expression. This could be authentically expressing your emotions, your creativity, or showing the world who you really are.

  • Inspiration

  • Purity

  • Truthfulness

The areas of the body it governs:

  • Throat

  • Thyroid

  • Jaw

  • Mouth

  • Shoulders

  • Neck

When the throat chakra is out of balance:

  • Communicating harshly (lashing out or saying what you don't mean)

  • Unable to express yourself (unable to express your emotions or show up as yourself)

  • Speech impediments

  • Excessive gossiping

  • Using manipulation to get what you want or the reaction you want from people.

  • Any issue with the parts of the body the throat governs (Ex: sore throat, under or overactive thyroid, or grinding teeth).

Personally, when my throat is out of balance it can feel as if someone is literally choking me out and preventing me from speaking my truth. But I can shut down and withhold my truth or speak my truth with a harsh tone or attitude. We are all human and there are times we slip up, instead of feeling bad about yourself observe what happens to you in these moments.

What's helped me bring my throat into balance:

  • Reiki or energy work. If you can't get to a practitioner you and give yourself reiki. Do this by rubbing your hands together and placing them on the sides of the throat.

  • Singing, humming, toning, chanting. This can be your favorite song, mantras, oming, or any sound you like to make. Ham (hum) is the sound of the throat chakra. Tonning this sound is very helpful in balancing your throat chakra.

  • Breathing deep and exhaling with a sigh or a sound.

  • Using essential oils like rosemary, valor, peppermint, or eucalyptus.

  • Placing a blue crystal on your throat in meditation or before bed. Or wearing a necklace, ring, or bracelet with your favorite blue crystal. I like kyanite, but it can be any blue crystal that you like.

  • Wearing blue or adding blue into your life. Painting your nails blue, writing with a blue pen, changing your bedsheets to blue, or anything you like.

  • Meditating or visualizing a blue light in the middle of your throat.

  • Getting in water to cleanse yourself. This is because the throat is about purity. So this could be a bath, shower, getting in a river, lake, or ocean.

  • Using affirmations. Here are two of my favorites:

I am safe to express myself

I allow myself to be authentic

  • Look back at the times in your life that you felt unheard, unseen, or got in trouble for speaking your truth. Rewrite the story and visualize that you were heard, seen, and accepted for your truth.

  • Start practicing speaking your truth! It going to take time, and it's a process but know that keeping it all in is hurting your throat chakra. If you are having difficulty communicating kindly practice silence and allow yourself to process the emotions before communicating. This will help you come from a place of love and your messages will have a better chance of being received.

Remember how we speak to ourselves and others is how we see the world. If you are negative to yourself or to others you are most likely going to have a life full of negativity.

Much love and namaste!
